Here, Mahabadi explains how this home’s design reflects the natural surroundings, emphasizes natural materials, and fosters a deep connection to the outdoors.
The overall design concept of this modern residence was influenced by Nordic design principle, modern California home, and focused on the relationship between privacy and comfort. There is an emphasis on clean lines, functionality combined with minimalist aesthetics, use of natural materials, a neutral color palette, and creation of light, airy spaces. This approach with connection to natural settings helps connect the home to its expansive site and the Mar Vista community.
In short, I would describe the style of this home as adaptive modern. A few words that come to mind to describe the essence of the design elements with its adaptation to the surrounding environment are minimalist, organic, light-filled, expansive and cozy.
The choice of materials played a crucial role in enhancing the aesthetic and functionality of the residence. The use of natural materials like cedar wood for siding and stucco as an eco-friendly material reflects a connection to nature, while creating a warm and inviting exterior atmosphere.
The use of concrete in painting the hardscape of the site, provides a modern touch and contrast with the softer natural materials used on the home’s structure. The use of plaster throughout the interior of the house has dramatically improved the aesthetic by offering versatility in texture and tactile experience in addition to enhancing the airy feel of the residence. The minimalist approach implemented has ultimately resulted in the creation of an upscale home that evokes feelings of warmth and comfort as the viewer transitions from the outside to the inside.
My favorite space within the home is the zen garden that is framed between the dining room and living room. The design of this home revolved around the focal point of the olive tree for it symbolizes renewal.
The presence of this mindful indent in the massing creates an interactive experience and encourages the residents to engage with the outdoor-indoor surroundings on a deeper level. I enjoy incorporating zen gardens for I believe the intentional break in experience as one walks the space promotes tranquility and mindfulness.
There were many sustainable design elements incorporated into this particular home. The elements incorporated to reduce environmental impact and improve energy efficiency include the installation of passive solar systems, high-performance windows and insulation, energy-efficient lighting and appliances, water-efficient fixtures, rainwater harvesting systems, smart home technology in addition to the use of local and natural materials, and low-VOC finishes. By thoughtfully incorporating these design elements, the homeowner can significantly reduce their environmental footprint and enjoy a comfortable, healthy, and efficient living means of living in this grand luxury home.
